Understanding the Daz Studio Interface
Learn how to navigate the Daz Studio workspace, identify the key panels like the Viewport and Content Library, and customise the layout so you can work faster and never feel lost.
Why the Interface Matters
A lot of beginners open Daz Studio for the first time and think: “What is all this?!”
The good news is — you don’t need to know every button right now.
Instead, focus on five key areas of the interface that you’ll use in almost every project:
- Viewport
- Parameters Tab
- Scene Tab
- Content Library
- Smart Content

Layout Overview
When you first open Daz Studio, the workspace is divided into panels and toolbars. Each one serves a specific purpose. We’ll go into details on these 4 main areas in future lessons.
Viewport
The Viewport is the large central area where your scene is displayed. You can see it located centrally above showing a loaded posed model.
- This is where you move, rotate, and zoom your view of the scene
- You can switch between Perspective View (default), Cameras you create, and even Orthographic Views for technical positioning
- Above the Viewport are render preview modes — you can quickly toggle between texture shaded, wireframe, and Iray preview
Scene Tab

The Scene Tab shows everything in your project in a list (hierarchy) format. So it will show your models and within the hierarchy of the model you’ll see any attached hair or clothing assets.
- Each object is a node — you can parent items to others (e.g., hair to a head, a gun to a hand)
- Clicking an item here selects it in the Viewport and vice versa
- You can hide or lock objects from this panel, which is useful for focusing on specific items
The Scene Tab can get quite busy in complex scenes so try and get into
the habit of organising your scene assets early.
Parameters Tab

Think of the Parameters Tab as as a container that shows all of the the “control sliders” for whatever is selected in the Scene Tab. These sliders can manipulate models, props, clothing, hair or any other asset loaded into the scene.
- If you select a character’s head, Parameters will show sliders for rotation, scaling, and morphs.
- If you select a light, it’ll show brightness, position, and spread angle.
- It’s context-sensitive — meaning what you see depends entirely on what’s selected in the Scene Tab.
It may look complicated when looking at the screenshot on the right but you’ll soon grasp how intuitive it all is and it will all become second nature to you
Content Library

The Content Library shows everything installed in Daz Studio, organized by folder structure . It’s from here you load assets into the scene – be that a model, hair, clothing or an environment. Once you understand the structure of the complex looking content library hierarchy you’ll be able to find the items you need quickly.
- Great for finding manually installed assets.
- Lets you access older products or items not tagged for Smart Content (see below)
- Mirrors your actual folder system on your computer.
